By focusing on employee integration, cutting-edge technology, and a commitment to innovation, Hawkey Cleaning successfully transformed the site into a model of excellence.
Mobilisation Period
The mobilisation period spanned four weeks prior to the contract’s go-live date. This critical phase began with a TUPE event, during which all staff were transferred to Hawkey Cleaning. Recognising the stress often associated with such transitions, we prioritised clear communication and reassurance. Our team conducted an engaging presentation to convey our vision and values, instilling confidence and enthusiasm in the team.
During these four weeks, we held weekly mobilisation meetings with our client, adpt, adhering to a “one-team” ethos. Using a detailed mobilisation Gantt chart, every step of the process was meticulously planned and executed, ensuring readiness by the end of the period.
The weekend before the contract’s start, a three-day intensive deep clean was conducted. A specialist team of nine operatives carried out deep cleaning tasks. By Monday, the site was spotless and ready for operations.
When the contract officially commenced, we launched the 100-Day Hawkey Cycle of Continuous Improvement, an initiative designed to bring the team and operations to an optimal level. We recognise that achieving 100% performance from day one is unrealistic with a new team and newly implemented systems. Instead, we take a collaborative approach, working alongside our staff and client to gradually improve over the first 100 days.
This initiative focuses on embedding new ways of working, training, and achieving operational excellence. By the end of the 100-day period, our aim is to consistently achieve audit and KPI scores of 95% or higher, ensuring sustained high performance.

Technology & Equipment
Hawkey introduced innovative tools and systems to elevate cleaning standards:
Equipment:
- iMops for efficient floor cleaning.
- Backpack battery-operated vacuums and stick vacs for flexible and cordless cleaning.
- Patent-pending automatic feminine hygiene units.
Software and Apps:
- A bespoke geolocation time and attendance system for accurate monitoring. • Uhub training platform for consistent staff development.
- Auditing and KPI software to ensure accountability.
- Client and staff portals for streamlined communication.
- Wagestream app to provide employees with financial flexibility.
Cleaning Products:
- We adopted the Jangro NTRL range, a cutting-edge, eco-friendly, and vegan cleaning chemical solution. The NTRL range offers high-performance cleaning while being non-toxic, biodegradable, and safe for both operatives and the environment.

Team Development & Operational Enhancements
To further enhance operations, we promoted Rebecca Harrison to supervisor and team lead, recognising her leadership potential. Additionally, we created two new roles:
Daytime Host Cleaner: A highly trained individual focused on delivering exceptional customer experiences.
Yardsperson: Responsible for maintaining external and car park areas to the highest standards. To support the evening team, we allocated additional weekly hours, implemented new shift structures, and revamped rota patterns to introduce more efficient ways of working. These changes ensured optimal coverage, improved flexibility, and enhanced overall service delivery.
Employee Welfare: All team members were introduced to a pay rate above the Real Living Wage, reinforcing our commitment to staff wellbeing. This not only boosted morale but also encouraged a sense of ownership and pride in their work.
Challenges & Outcomes
Adapting to change was the primary challenge, as not all staff initially embraced the new systems and standards. However, under the strong leadership of Steve Winterburn, Carla Rodrigues, Rebecca Harrison, and Hugh Scott, the team overcame these hurdles. With continuous support, the entire staff eventually adopted the new practices, fostering a culture of collaboration and excellence.
Conclusion
Hawkey Cleaning’s mobilisation at Programme Bristol stands as a testament to our commitment to innovation, sustainability, and employee-centric practices.
The introduction of the 100-Day Hawkey Cycle of Continuous Improvement ensures that we continually enhance performance, reaching optimal levels of operation while fostering a collaborative and empowered team.
